We've been advised that MPs are more likely to respond when letters are personal, rather than template letters from campaigns.
With this in mind we have thought up a few top tips that may be helpful!
Talk about your own concerns, from local to global food insecurity issues. Maybe you have some direct experience or know of others that do?
In the UK many are struggling to meet their basic needs, skipping meals on a daily basis or even for days at a time. In one of the richest nations this is shameful, everyone could and should have their basic needs met.
As the climate crisis rages across the globe, with wildfires, floods and droughts, crops that we rely on are failing. Presently in the UK we import 46% of our food. Our food systems are interconnected and global food issues will affect UK food security.
Globally, so many lives are already devastated, with millions displaced yearly due to extreme weather events, an escalating crisis. Presently 2.3 million die of malnutrition yearly. 45% of child deaths are due to malnutrition.
When there is an increase in the shortage of essentials, this will bring further conflict, war, displacement and suffering..
Fossil fuel companies are presently making billions in excessive windfall profits. Meanwhile the government is giving 91.4% (£90 out of every £100) back to them in tax relief for re- invest in energy security, this includes investment in new oil and gas exploration and development. A major driver in the climate crisis.
Billions are being paid out to shareholders, and the number of the super rich is on the rise with a 20% increase in UK billionaires in 2021. Meanwhile more and more are struggling to feed themselves and their children, having to choose between heating and eating. The rising cost of energy pushes up the cost of food and other essentials affecting the cost of living.
The science is clear from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, International Energy Agency and the Government's own advisory board the Committee on Climate Change: we must have no new fossil fuel development or expansion for a livable future. Those that have the least, both in the UK and globally, will be hit the hardest first.
We know we can do so much better! Rooted in the principles of care we can create a livable future where food systems are more robust, benefit our environment and are socially just.
Imagine if every child in the world had what they needed, if no child felt the pangs of hunger. This is something worth striving for.
